What is EFTPS?

EFTPS is a free service from the U.S. Department of the Treasury that allows tax preparers, small businesses and individuals to pay all federal taxes electronically, including income, employment, estimated and excise taxes. EFTPS offers a variety of payment methods, including the Internet and a telephone voice response system, as well as other electronic solutions for tax preparers of all sizes.

EFTPS allows taxpayers to make payment instructions for themselves, or on behalf of clients, in advance of the tax due date. Based on the tax payment instructions you specify, EFTPS initiates a debit against the appropriate party's financial institution accounts, sends the money to the Treasury directly and updates the payee's account records with the IRS.

After a one-time enrollment process, you can initiate payments electronically 24 hours a day, seven days a week. EFTPS offers a variety of payment methods, including the Internet and a telephone voice response system, as well as other electronic solutions for tax preparers of all sizes.

EFTPS is a simple, useful tool that saves taxpayers time and money. Here are some suggestions for using the service:

Choose what's best for you. Determine which easy way of using EFTPS is right for your individual or business needs.

  • If you make occasional payments, whether for yourself, or on behalf of a few clients, consider EFTPS Online or EFTPS by telephone voice response system. To enroll online, click here.
  • If you are a tax preparer who makes several federal tax payments for business and individual clients on a regular basis, consider EFTPS batch provider software.
  • If you process a high volume of payroll or regular tax payments for clients, consider becoming an EFTPS bulk provider.

Plan ahead. If you will be out of town when a tax payment is due, or if you want to plan ahead, take advantage of EFTPS advance payment scheduling. Schedule your payment instructions and EFTPS will automatically process your payments for you on the due date you indicate.

Be in control. With EFTPS, you are in control of initiating your tax payments. Your tax due date remains the same, and no government agency has access to your bank account.
